How to design and build distribution boards in accordance with standards

DIN EN 61439 is complex – we make it simple for you.

Time pressure, demanding standards and the responsibility for a safe switchgear installation: for many electricians, EN 61439 is a real challenge.
That’s why we’ve clearly compiled everything you need for standard-compliant planning and safe DIY installation – fast, easy to understand and practical.

And if you’d prefer a ready-to-connect distribution board?
We’ll build it for you – made to measure and compliant with standards up to 5.000 A.

What does the standard specify?

EN IEC 61439 sets out the safety requirements for electrical equipment for designers, system integrators, electricians and end users, in order to ensure that safety objectives for people and equipment within electrical installations are met. It is the key standard for low-voltage switchgear assemblies.

FAQ

1. Is a type approval required?

Yes. The design verification for the control cabinet is a one-off requirement and involves several verification procedures (e.g. permissible temperature rise).

2. What does comprehensive control cabinet documentation include?

  • Parts list
  • Type approval certificate
  • CE Declaration of Conformity
  • Technical data sheets
  • Circuit diagrams

3. What are switchgear assemblies?

These are combined components in the control cabinet in accordance with EN 61439.

4. What guidelines apply to control panel construction?

EN 61439 (VDE 0660-600), EMC requirements and internal manufacturer tests.

5.Who is responsible for ensuring compliance with the standard?

Planners, manufacturers and installers each have clearly defined areas of responsibility.

6. Can I mix and match components from different manufacturers?

Yes – but only if its safe operation can be demonstrated.

7. Does the standard also apply to minor retrofits?

Yes – any change can affect compliance.
